What are health food stores?
A health food store is like a grocery store that sells health food, organic foods, local produce, and mostly nutritional supplements. They cater to the special dietary needs of people who are either allergic or diabetics, for vegans and vegetarians or people who survive on raw food only. These stores stock food which are especially beneficial to health and provide for what the usual grocery store doesn’t. As there is more and more awareness towards health food or organic food, even a lot of departmental stores have devoted a complete section to health foods.
Growth of health food market in US
Many of the health foods that are a common part of the grocery store today, were first seen in the market in late 1800’s, the pioneers of health like Sylvester Graham, Horace Greeley, Ellen White and more evoked the interest of people in health foods. The first lot of health foods that were sold in US was molasses and brewer’s yeast. With the ecology movement the health food stores became more common as there was more and more awareness. A number of health food stores are owned by workers or co-operatives. As the health food or more commonly known organic food has become a part of mainstream market, multinational companies are becoming a part of this industry and earning great profits. The US saw a huge growth in the retail sales of organic and health food and beverages sector, it reached about $8 billion in 2000, and has been increasing manifolds there after. The US is world’s biggest market of this product. The reason behind this strong growth of retail of health foods in the US is the ever increasing awareness of health and environmental issues. The consumers are now aware of the GMOs, genetically modified organisms and GM farming and are refusing to accept the same. Another reason for the growth of health food sector is the focused and objective marketing strategy by the retail sector. The marketing strategy intensified as more and more mainstream retailers enter into the health food segment. The countries biggest names in the food sector are now into developing a stand alone organic food product line.
Product categories
The health foods that are imported from outside US can be categorized into four broad categories, products that are basically tropical, off season products, in season products and novelty or specialty products. Tropical products are not produced in the US or even if these are produced in the US the quantity is negligible. Products such as coffee, tea, cocoa, tropical fruits and vegetables, processed fruit juices, concentrates and pulp, a variety of spices and herbs, dried fruits and nuts etc. these products are mainly produced and supplied to US organic health food stores from the developing countries. Next is the category of off season products like fresh fruits and vegetables produced in the US, but at when there is a demand but can not be produced in the US due to climatic reasons these are then produced and supplied by producers in the southern hemisphere. There are some specialty products which are high quality organic wines, certain ethnic food
Be cautious about the ingredients
Although health foods have immense amount of benefits, never forget to check the label on products that you purchase for the table of contents and ingredients. It has also been found that some of the products in the grocery stores or even health food stores are not labeled correctly. When you read “healthy” or “natural” on the products they do not necessarily mean that these are organic or all natural products. So you must check that taste augmenters such as MSG or monosodium glutamate are not present in the product. This chemical has proven to have effect on reproductive disorders, migraines and at times damage to the endocrine system which may lead to obesity or some other major disorder. Be careful and know the contents of your health food and be cautious to avoid ingredients that are not good for your health.
Online health food stores
The health food market in US and the rest of the world is so huge that you can now shop for your health food online with out any fuss. The online health food stores are doing unbelievable business thanks to our busy lifestyle and technological dependence. It is rather more convenient to shop for your favorite health food online than walking down to the stores. Each and every product is available with all necessarily information and they are properly labeled. Incase you come across a product or a website that doesn’t describe the contents and ingredients of any product well be sure to skip that particular website and move to another which is clear about what it is selling! There are many options so there is no need to compromise.

You have to actually read the labels to see what the ingredients are. Just because something is sold at a health store does not mean it is healthy. Make sure you read up on bad ingredients like HFCS and stay away from them.
