What is laser surgery?

Laser surgery has many uses, from taking care of your cosmetic needs to more necessary ones like taking care of your eye problem or skin issues. There are many ways by which a laser surgery is useful to mankind. A scar on your face or any other prominent part of the body can look extremely ugly and if you are a bit conscious of your appearance it could lead to a lot of depression. The advanced technology available these days enable you to easily get rid of the scars or marks that are undesirable. There are many techniques, by which you can remove or improve the severity of a scar such as dermabrasion, collagen injections, chemical peels, skin grafts etc. The laser scar removal technique lessens the appearance of keloid scars, hypertrophic scars and atrophic scars. There are some conditions when a laser surgery is not very useful. Certain skin disorders are not corrected by laser scar removal method.

Laser eye surgery

The laser eye surgery is extremely beneficial to people who suffer from eye sight problems. This surgery gives total freedom from wearing eyewear. Laser refractive surgery is becoming very important these days. This is one of the best vision correction methods to date. Laser treatment is an integral part of refractive eye surgery process, earlier it was not so. Ophthalmologists did not depend on this procedure earlier. A laser is a short form for light extension by moved release of radiation. Laser is graded as per the medium used to generate it. It is either solid, gas or semi-conductor in nature. The laser light is mostly steady; hence the light is emitted in a narrow low-divergence beam. This can be converted in to one beam with the help of optical components like lenses. The light and heat energy travels in waves and frequencies. Each and every laser beam has its particular wavelength because of which it has a particular color and temperature.

Lasik Laser surgery

The corrective laser eye surgery came in to being in the late 1800s when Dutch professor Lans gave the basic principles of keratotomy or corneal incisions to correct refractive errors. In this technique a laser is used to cut a tissue instead of scalpel. One of the techniques used in laser is LASIK; Lasik is very useful in correcting near and far sightedness in vision. There is another technique photorefractive keratectomy, this procedure reshapes the cornea permanently using an excimer laser and eliminating a minute part of the corneal tissue. This technique is best so far, as it gives a high amount of success with very little or no complications. Lasik laser surgery is relatively new in the field of eye surgery. In this procedure a blade is used to cut a thin flap of the cornea and post that an excimer laser is used to remove or reshape the tissue beneath the flap. This procedure is less fussy and time taking. The patient recovers much faster as compared to other previous techniques. With the technological advances now the laser eye surgery can be done with Wavefront technology which leads to much quick healing and there are negligible side effects. The epi Lasik technique that removes a thinner layer of the corneal tissue or the refractive lumpectomy that requires implanting a multifocal lens inside the eye of the patient giving a clear vision at all distances. This latest technique is quite successful too and most of the people tend to opt for this technique only.

Cost

The cost of laser eye surgery vary a lot, they can be reasonable or exorbitant, depending on some factors. One very vital factor in deciding the cost of laser eye surgery is the doctor’s experience and his charges. Another factor responsible for stride in the cost of this surgery is the kind of procedure involved. Depending on the severity of the eye problem, the doctor decided which technique would be best for a patient. The average cost would be somewhere between $1500 to $2000, again there could be a variant if the patient has to go beyond the basic surgery.  You can be prepared for some extra expenses beyond this range. A specialized and custom surgery will surely call for a much higher charge. You can call up your insurance company to check with them if laser eye surgery cost is covered by your insurance.

Risks

As far as the laser surgery is concerned, we can say that the laser eye surgery risks are negligible or none. It is the safest way to deal with your vision problem, as the latest technological advances come into play and you get the surgery done by an experienced doctor. But, just like any other surgery there can be some chances of a thing or two going wrong.  There is a rare chance that your surgery is not successful but there is not any irreversible damage in this procedure.
