Formulate a plan

Each and every truck driver has a dream to own a trucking company in future. There is definitely a lot of scope of business in this arena, but it is no piece of cake. It requires a lot more than driving skills to create and run business of truck companies.  You need to create a full fledged well devised plan to run trucking company. There are a certain things you need to decide before you start off. You need to shortlist and decide the kind of services you would be providing, if you would specialize in a particular kind of freight which one would that be? To be able to function well, what is the minimum number of trucks that you are going to require? What will be the cost of infrastructure, such as office space, work stations etc.  How would you promote your business? How do you plan to do the costing etc. are only a few questions you would need to answer before you venture out to setting up your own truck company. You need to design a proper business plan and have a detailed list of all the things you would require to get your business up and running. It doesn’t need to be a very fancy one but it should definitely and clearly contain your business goals and the process you wish to follow.

Selecting suitable trailers

The next step after putting together a business plan you need to register your business. It is quite simple to get your company registered. You need to fill out some forms which would need to be submitted in order to convert your business idea into a real business entity. You can visit the Chamber of Commerce in your location and get your freight trucking company registered by following the process. If you intend to specialize in perishable items and goods then you need to have refrigerated trailers and if you intend to freight general goods then a simple standard trailer would suffice. The kind of goods you are dealing in would decide which trailers you need to purchase and how many.

Buy as per budget

If you are on a limited budget and can not invest on too many trucks to begin with you can even take help from truck owners or operators by sub contracting with them. But you will need to ensure that the operator uses the trucks which are in good working condition and their permits and driver’s licenses are up to date.  But if you are well prepared with the funds do not hesitate to invest your money in good trucks. Make sure you have good and reliable trucks of the varieties you need to deliver your freight goods. If you require a particular type of trailer more than another make sure you have them. Do not forget to check that all the paper work is complete and the licenses and permits are complete. Your drivers are proper license holders and experienced. You do not want to run into any sort of trouble when they are out delivering the goods.

You can become a full service third party logistics provider. You can specialize in regional or national transportation. If you are well endowed do not hesitate to tap the international market either. Make sure you offer state of the art technology and advanced communications. Pay attention to each and every minute detail as you know this is your area of expertise; you must provide such a service that your clients feel the same way about you. If you are one of the flatbed trucking companies make sure you train the drivers and they have a reasonable amount of over the road experience. The driver needs to ensure that the goods are properly secured to the bed while he operates the flatbed. This is quite physical and requires a lot of maturity on part of the driver. It is ideal to have a team of drivers or owner operator to carry out this task.  Since the profile is quite important and necessary it is best to hire well experienced drivers in this work even if you have to pay a little extra then regular truck drivers.

Go Green

As everyone is going green, you can also make sure to go green. It doesn’t take much effort but yields best results for your business as well as environment. You can promote the use of hybrid vehicles when ever they are available. Make sure to test your diesel engines smoke tested. Reduced speed limit settings will help bringing down the green house gases.  Another very important aspect is that if your facility is well lit it would allow more energy efficiency.  These are very small gestures but would help your business to grow manifold. And the impact on environment is incredible.

That is great that so many truck drivers have an entrepreneurial spirit. I know a lot of drivers, though, that feel happier knowing they have job security, health benefits, and no risk of losing the company.

This was a terrific hub on the trucking industry. The trucking industry is essential to our overall economy in so many ways, and often underapprecated.
